From Middle English maken, from 古期英語 macian (“to make, build, work”), from Proto-Germanic *makōnan (“to make, build, work”), from Proto-Indo-European *mag- (“to knead, mix, make”). Cognate with Dutch maken (“to make”), Low German maken (“to make”), German machen (“to make, do”). Related to match.
