Persian ستان (stān) and Sanskrit स्थान (sthā́na), both deriving from common Indo-Iranian verbal stem √sthā (“to stand, stay”), from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”), whence also English verbs stay and stand.

From Proto-Germanic *stainaz, from Proto-Indo-European *stāino-, *stī-no- (a suffixed form of *stāi- (“to be solid, to crowd together”)); cognate with Old Frisian stēn, Old Saxon stēn (Dutch steen), Old High German stein (German Stein), Old Norse steinn (Danish かつ Swedish sten), Gothic ������������. The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek στῖον ‘pebble’, Slavic *stēnā- (Bulgarian かつ Russian стена, Czech stěna ‘wall’).
