原義は「言葉を揺さぶり粉々にする→討論する」。実験結果や既存の理論などを多角的に検討、検証し、様々な考えを示して「議論する」という意味で使う。

From Middle French and Anglo-Norman discusser (French: discuter), from Latin discussus, past participle of discutere (“to strike または shake apart, break up, scatter, also, in derivatives かつ in Medieval Latin, examine, discuss”), from dis- (“apart”) + quatere (“to shake”).
