From Middle English shoppe, from 古期英語 sceoppa, scoppa (“shop, booth, shed”), from Proto-Germanic *skupp-, *skup- (“barn, shed”), from Proto-Indo-European *skub-, *skup- (“to bend, bow, curve, vault”). Cognate with German Schuppen (“shed”), German Schober (“barn”).
