From Middle English sour, from 古期英語 sūr (“sour”), from Proto-Germanic *sūraz (“sour”), from Proto-Indo-European *sūr- (“sour (milk)”). Cognate with Dutch zuur (“sour”), German sauer (“sour”), Swedish sur (“sour”), Icelandic súr (“sour, bitter”).
