原義は「広がる、広げる」。一般的な用法の主な意味は、「畳んであった物を広げ、それが以前よりも広い範囲を覆う(カバーする)ことができるようにする」、「物を異なる多くの場所に散らす、まき散らす」。科学技術論文では例えば、1.物点、ビーム、強度分布などの物(もの)を「(四方八方に)広げる、散らす(まき散らす)」(他動詞用法)、2.物点、ビーム、強度分布などの物(もの)が「(四方八方に)広がる、散らばる」(自動詞用法)というように使う。
