The advanced thermal reactor Fugen is a prototype reactor that Japan has independently developed. During its operation period, a total of 772 MOX fuel assemblies were loaded, and achievements were made including the realization of a small-scale fuel cycle in which plutonium separated from spent fuels was re-used as a fuel in Fugen.
