From Middle English lodesman, lodesmon, lodysman (“pilot”, literally “lode's または course's man”), alteration of earlier lodeman, from 古期英語 lādmann (“a leader, guide”), equivalent to lode (“way, course”) + -s- + man. Compare to lodemanage.
