「Celsius」は温度を示す単位であり、スウェーデンの天文学者アンデルス・セルシウスが提唱した温度計の目盛りに由来する。世界的に広く使用されており、特に科学的な文脈や国際的なコミュニケーションで好まれる表記である。水の凝固点を0℃、沸点を100℃と定義している。
