- Among small manufacturers in particular, new and diverse forms of business unlike those normally found in manufacturing are developing. These include "R&D-oriented enterprises" specializing in R&D and the development of prototypes, "fabless" enterprises that outsource all production processes without maintaining any production plant of their own, and "manufacturer/retailers" that handle the entire process from production to retail without going through distribution channels (Fig. 2-1-19).
