この「凡例」は、研究社 新英和・和英中辞典の凡例 に基づいて作成されています。Right or not, it's a fact. 正しかろうと正しくなかろうと事実だ 《★Whether it is right or not, … の略》.
Are you coming or not? 君は来るのか来ないのか 《★…or are you not coming の略》.
“Is he ill?"—“Not at all." 「彼は病気ですか」「病気なもんか」 《★He's not at all ill. の略》.
“Is she wrong?"—“Probably not." 「彼女は間違っているかしら」「たぶん間違ってはいないでしょう」 《★She's probably not wrong. の略; 同類の副詞に perhaps, certainly, absolutely, of course などがある》.
“Will he pass?"—“I think not." 「彼は合格するだろうか」「合格しないと思うよ」 《★I think he will not pass. の略; I don't think so. のほうが一般的; cf. not 1b; 同類の動詞に suppose, believe, hope, expect, be afraid などがある》.
