The theory of association schemes arose in statistics, in the theory of the design of experiments for the analysis of variance. Association schemes are also studied in mathematics. In algebraic combinatorics, association schemes provide a unified approach to topics in combinatorics, particularly in combinatorial designs and coding theory. Association schemes can be viewed as a generalization of groups, and the theory of association schemes generalizes the character theory of linear representations of groups.
