From 中期英語 Calde Kuningeston (recorded 1202), from 古期英語 cald (“cold”) + Cuningestone (recorded 1086 in the Domesday Book), from Old Norse konungs (“king's”) + 古期英語 tūn (“fort, manor, town”). The reference to "cold" referred to its exposed location and distinguished it from other similar placenames. Doublet of Coniston. Cf. also Conington, Conisbrough, Coningsby, Kingston, Kingstone, Kingstown, Kingsburg, and Kingsville.
