The microfilaria (plural microfilariae, sometimes abbreviated mf) is a stage in the life cycle of certain parasitic nematodes in the family Onchocercidae. In these species, the adults live in the circulatory system of vertebrates (the "definitive hosts") while the early larval stages develop in blood-feeding arthropod vectors (the "intermediate hosts"). The microfilariae are released into the bloodstream of the vertebrate host, and are taken up by the arthropod vector. In the arthropod vector, the microfilariae develop into infective larvae.
