Twente (or Twenthe, Dutch Low Saxon: Tweante) is a non-administrative region in the eastern Netherlands, probably named after the Tuihanti or Tvihanti, a tribe that settled in the area and was mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. Twente encompasses the most urbanised and easterly part of the province of Overijssel. The region's borders are roughly defined by the rivers Regge and Dinkel, the Dutch-German national border and the Overijssel-Gelderland provincial border.
