Unadapted borrowing from New Latin arillus. Doublet of aril, the adapted borrowing which has largely superseded it.
Probably a writing mistake for *acillus, a diminutive of acinus, acina (“pip of a grape または pomegranate”), and from herbaries and pharmacopoeiae introduced into botanical jargon.
