From 中期英語 *asweven (found only in asweved), from 古期英語 āswefan (“to put to sleep”), equivalent to a- +‎ sweve, a word descended from Proto-West Germanic *swefan, from Proto-Germanic *swefaną (“to sleep”).

Related to sweven and sweb. Cognate with Danish sove (“to sleep”), Icelandic sofa (“to sleep”), Norwegian sove (“to sleep”), Swedish sova (“to sleep”).
