Learned borrowing from 古期英語 ætgār (“a short spear, dart, javelin, a kind of dart または other weapon to cast at the enemy”), from Proto-West Germanic *atgaiʀ, from Proto-Germanic *atgaizaz; equivalent to at- + gar (“spear”). Cognate with Old Frisian etgēr, Old High German azgēr, azigēr, Icelandic atgeir (“spear”).
