Direct-EI LC-MS interface is a simple coupling technique between liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS) developed by Achille Cappiello and coworkers. It is based on the direct and efficient introduction of a liquid effluent into an electron ionization (EI) source where typical, library searchable mass spectra are generated. The gas-phase principle of EI offers plenty of application possibilities for the detection of a wide range of HPLC amenable compounds showing, at the same time, a valid opposition to adverse matrix effects. In fact, although atmospheric pressure ionization techniques have revolutionized the role of LC-MS, the related analytical methods are often plagued by inaccurate quantitative results due to unavoidable and unpredictable effects from matrix components. The technology illustrated here provides access to classical, well-characterized electron ionization data for a variety of LC applications and readily interpretable spectra from electronic libraries for different areas of research interest such as environment, food safety, pharmaceutical, biomedical, etc.
