From the oblique cases of 古期英語 feþer, from Proto-West Germanic *feþru, from Proto-Germanic *feþrō, from Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ ~ pth₂én-. The form fyþer is probably influenced by 古期英語 fiþre (“wing”).
