Learned borrowing from 中期英語 galder, from 古期英語 galdor, from Proto-West Germanic *galdr, from Proto-Germanic *galdraz (“song, incantation, spell”), through garnered interest via Old Norse galdr, equivelant to gale + -der, or yell + -der, deriving from a sense of "magical chanting".
