1. (set theory) The hypothesis that, for each ordinal ${\displaystyle \alpha }$, there is no cardinal number strictly between ${\displaystyle \aleph _{\alpha }}$ and ${\displaystyle 2^{\aleph _{\alpha }}}$, i.e. ${\displaystyle 2^{\aleph _{\alpha }}=\aleph _{\alpha +1}}$.
