Haloxylon is a genus of plants belonging to the Amaranthaceae. Three of its species are known by the common name saxaul (sometimes sacsaoul or saksaul; from the Russian saksaul, which is from Kazakh seksevil): Haloxylon ammodendron; Haloxylon aphyllum, known as black saxaul; and Haloxylon persicum, also called white saxaul. In the deserts of Central Asia, a large number of birds are associated with saxaul, including the Saxaul Sparrow.
