From the Italian form of the name of French 14th century saint Roch, of Germanic origin. The meaning is obscure; Old High German hruoh (“crow”) (from Proto-Germanic *hrōkaz), hrok (“rest”) (modern Ruhe) and rohōn (“to roar”) (modern röhren) have been suggested.
