From Old Norse skeppa, skjappa (“a bushel, measure”), from Old Saxon *skeppio, whence Middle Low German scheppe (“a unit of weight”). Ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *skappjō (compare Proto-West Germanic *skap (“shape”)), from Proto-Germanic *skapjô (“vessel, tub, bushel”), from *skapą (“a creation, shape”).
