From Proto-West Germanic *snotr, from Proto-Germanic *snutraz, perhaps from the same Indo-European root as Ancient Greek νόος (nóos, “mind”). Cognate with Old High German snottar, Old Norse snotr, Gothic 𐍃𐌽𐌿𐍄𐍂𐍃 (snutrs).
