Wash load is the portion of sediment that is carried by a fluid flow, usually in a river, such that it always remains near the free surface (near the top of the flow in a river). It consists of the finest particles. Wash load is significant because it is the mode of sediment transport in which there is little to no interaction with the bed or banks and in which particles can be moved without extracting non-negligible momentum from the flow.
