From Proto-Germanic *wanjaz, diminutive of Proto-Germanic *wan- (“swelling, growth, lump, tumor”), of uncertain origin. According to Watkins, it is related to *wundō (“wound”).
Cognate with Middle Low German wene (“wen”), Middle Dutch wanne, wan (“goiter”).
