Perhaps a conflation of plaga (“tract, region”) with Ancient Greek πλάγια (plágia, “sides, flanks”), from Ancient Greek πλάγιος (plágios, “slanting, aslant”), compare Greek πλαγιά (plagiá, “mountainslope, hillside”).
