From 中期英語 scathel (“harmful”), from Old Norse *skǫðull, from Proto-Germanic *skaþulaz (“harmful”), equivalent to scathe + -el. Cognate with Old High German scadel (“injurious, harmful”), Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌸𐌿𐌻𐍃 (skaþuls, “injurious, wicked”).
