From 中期英語 abiten, from 古期英語 ābītan (“to bite in pieces, tear to pieces, bite, eat, devour, gnaw, taste, partake of, consume”), from Proto-Germanic *uz- (“out”) + *bītaną (“to bite”), equivalent to a- + bite.
