Circassia (Adyghe: Адыгэ Хэку,Russian: Черке́сия,Arabic: شيركاسيا) is a region in the Caucasus that was independent before the Russian invasion of the Caucasus between 1763-1864. Historically, it comprised the southern half of the current Krasnodar Territory, most of the interior of the current Stavropol Territory, Karachay-Cherkessia, Adygea and Kabardino-Balkaria Republics of the Russian Federation. However, the region now only refers to a portion of the Karachay-Cherkessia, Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Shapsugia. The historical region is named by its inhabitants, referred to in the West as Circassians.
