別の表記

  • Dioclea

語源

From Illyrian *Doukliā, from *dōkl- (hiding place, shelter), from Proto-Indo-European *dhoukl- (dark, hidden, hiding place). This is ultimately derived from the root *dheu- (to whirl, to smoke), extended with the formans *-k-. The name likely refers to the city's secluded location, geographically "hidden" by deep river canyons and surrounding mountains. Cognates include Sanskrit सन्धुक्षते (sam-dhukṣatē, fans, ignites, enlivens), Lithuanian dvėkti (to breathe, gasp), Old High German tougan (dark, hidden), and Latvian kans (dark-colored).
