From 中期英語 Fulewde, from 古期英語 fūl (“dirty, foul”), definite form fūla + wudu (“wood”), 'the dirty wood'. The first element could possibly otherwise come from fugol (“bird, fowl”), thus 'wood where fowling takes place'.
