Not attested classically. Coined by Swiss physician, philosopher, theologian, and alchemist Paracelsus in the 16th century, possibly from a compound of Ancient Greek γῆ (gê, “earth”) and νομός (nomós, “dwelling”). Also compare Ancient Greek γνώμη (gnṓmē).
