Borrowed from Norwegian hird, from Old Norse hirð, a borrowing from 古期英語 hīred, hēored (“family, household”), from Proto-West Germanic *hīwarād (“relationship; family”), equivalent to hewe + rede. Cognate with German Heirat (“wedding”).
