If an optical emitter (e.g. an atom) shows homogeneous broadening, its linewidth is its natural linewidth, with a lorentzian profile (see spectral linewidth). In contrast, an inhomogeneously broadened emitter has a broader linewidth than the natural, and has a gaussian profile.
