The Jangam or Jangama are a "Sivite order of wandering religious mendicants. The Jangams are the priests or gurus of the Sivite sect of Lingāyats". "The word Jangam is derived from the movable emblem (linga) of Lord Shiva. They migrated from Karnataka in order to propagate the Shaivaite cult and to act as priests for those who do not avail the services of Brahmans [sic] for performing religious rites.
