Inherited from 中期英語 Lyde, from 古期英語 hlȳda, from hlȳdan (“to make noise”) + -a (agentive suffix), literally “noise-maker”; thus the only Germanic month name to survive in Modern English. Compare loud, and more distantly listen, slave.
