During the 1960s, the Research Laboratories of Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Palo Alto, California, with fiscal assistance from NASA, begin a series of sounding rocket flights to search for an astronomical X-ray source, a Lockheed X-ray source. When detected, these X-ray sources are denoted as Lockheed n, where n is an integer assigned in the order of increasing galactic longitude (ℓ) in the ℓII galactic coordinates system, starting at ℓII = 180°. A third set of Lockheed numbers includes those sources likewise given Lockheed numbers describing surveys of lower resolution.
