Borrowed from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad), likely via a variety of Arabic that had the first two vowels metathesized; for example, Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“maḥummad”). The penultimate vowel is presumed long from the inherited stress of the descendant languages.
