Nemmersdorf in East Prussia (today's Mayakovskoye, Kaliningrad Oblast) was one of the first pre-war ethnic German villages to fall to the advancing Red Army. On October 22, 1944 it was the scene of an alleged massacre said to have been perpetrated by the Soviet soldiers against German civilians. Determining the facts has aroused controversy. Since 1991, when Russian records became newly available, scholars now generally believe that the Nazis exploited the incident for propaganda, in an attempt to increase civilian resistance to the Soviet Army advance. Some details of atrocities turned out to have occurred elsewhere.
