From the Norman habitational surname, from the village of Pleugueneuc, in Brittany, said to be from Breton plou (“parish”) (from Latin plebs) + the personal name Guenec, formed from gwenn (“white”). As an Irish surname, it has been Gaelicized in Pluincéid.
