Project 571 (Chinese: 五七一工程; pinyin: Wǔqīyī gōngchéng) was the numeric codename given to an alleged plot or coup d'etat against Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1971 by the supporters of Lin Biao, then Vice-Chairman of the Communist Party of China. The operations were supposedly led by Lin's son, Lin Liguo, a high-ranking officer in the People's Liberation Air Force. The alleged plot ultimately failed and was followed by an apparent attempt by Lin's family to flee the country. Lin, his wife and son died in a plane crash over Mongolia on 13 September 1971.
