a drug that was being used for pain relief and was being studied for its ability to prevent cancer and to prevent the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. it is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and a type of antiangiogenesis agent. rofecoxib was taken off the market in the u.s. because of safety concerns. also called vioxx.

かつては疼痛の緩和に用いられ、がんの予防作用や血管新生（腫瘍の増殖に必要な新たな血管の成長）の阻害作用について研究されていた薬物。非ステロイド性抗炎症薬の一種であり、血管新生阻害薬の一種でもある。ロフェコキシブは安全性上の懸念から、米国では販売が中止された。「vioxx」とも呼ばれる。

Rofecoxib (pronounced /ˌrɒfɨˈkɒksɪb/) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has now been withdrawn over safety concerns. It was marketed by Merck & Co. to treat osteoarthritis, acute pain conditions, and dysmenorrhoea. Rofecoxib was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 20, 1999, and was marketed under the brand names Vioxx, Ceoxx, and Ceeoxx.
