From Old Norse Þórsá (“Thor's River”). The Norse is likely an adaptation of the Latin Tarvodubron from a Proto-Brythonic reflex of Proto-Celtic *tarwos (“bull”) + *dubros (“water”).

Thurso (from Old Norse, meaning 'Bull's River' and called, Inbhir Theòrsa in Scottish Gaelic) is a town and former burgh on the north coast of the Highland local government area of Scotland, UK. Historically, the town is one of two burghs within the county of Caithness. Thurso has a population of approximately 9,000 residents (2001 census). It lies at the junction of the north-south A9 road and the west-east A836 road, connected to Bridge of Forss in the west and Castletown in the east.
