Wesleyan is the adjective form of Wesley, referring either to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism (a group of denominations within Protestant Christianity) or to one or another of the branches within Methodism. It also refers to the many holiness denominations which adhere to the teachings of John Wesley. It is also the formal name of some such denominations; for example, a group that split from the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1843 was named the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which following a merger with the Pilgrim Holiness Church has grown into an international denomination called the Wesleyan Church. There are other denominations with similar titles.
