Inherited from 中期英語 Wynescumbe, Wynscombe, via Anglo-Norman Winescome, a spelling reinterpretation of 古期英語 *Wīnescumb, from 古期英語 wīn (“wine”) + 古期英語 cumb (“valley”), literally 'The wine valley/combe'.

Winscombe is a village in North Somerset, England, close to the settlements of Axbridge and Cheddar, on the western edge of the Mendip Hills, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Weston-super-Mare and 14 miles (23 km) south-west of Bristol. The Parish of Winscombe and Sandford, centred around the Parish Church of Saint James the Great, includes the villages/hamlets of Barton, Hale, Oakridge, Sidcot and Woodborough.
