A vulgar term acquired in the Imperial era. Compared to Ancient Greek κάναβος (kánabos, “wooden framework round”) and καλύβη (kalúbē, “hut”) with indecision, for the senses do not match. Possibly of Semitic origin, as the same meanings are found in Aramaic חָנוּתָא / ܚܳܢܽܘܬܴܐ (ḥānūṯā).
