Unknown. No cognates in other languages. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *klaukōn, a derivative of Proto-West Germanic *klauwjan (“to claw, scratch”) + *-ukōn (frequentative suffix). If so, equivalent to clawan + -cian. Alternatively, perhaps a corruption of tealtian (“to shake, be unsteady”).
